WHAT IS SPECIAL EDUCATION?
Special education is specially designed instruction, support, and services provided to students with an identified disability to meet their unique learning needs, through an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) after an evaluation is done.
The instruction, support and services are provided by the student`s special education team at school. The team is composed of the special education teacher, the parents/guardians, the classroom teacher, and it may include related services such as a physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech and language therapist, or other specialists. The team varies depending on the disability area, whether they meet criteria for related services, and the needs the student has within the disability.
The process for a student to recieve special education:
The purpose of special education is to enable students to reach their highest potential by providing a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
*The referral to special education can also be done by a parent, which in some districts has to be presented to the school in writing. The school/district then has 15 days to provide the parent with a response in order to initiate the evaluation process.
