The Process
The process towards special education varies from district to district, but once the evaluation process has been initiated, steps being taken should be similar.
Who can do a referral?
Who can do a referral?
- A parent or guardian makes the referral for their child to be evaluated for special education. Some districts require this referral in writing. The district has a time limit to respond to the referral.
- A teacher can make referral. This usually initiates the RtI (Response to Intervention).
- RtI team can make a referral once levels of intervention have been documented and results have been not what they were anticipated.
- A medical condition that adversely affects the child's access to education.
